Robert A. Ballance, Ph.D Principal Member of Technical Staff, Org. 04328 Sandia National Laboratories

Large computing systems, like Sandia National Laboratories’ Red Storm, are neither designed nor deployed in isolation. The computer, its infrastructure support, and the operations of both have to be designed to support the mission of the organization. System engineering is the process of developing and tuning complete systems. System management is the ongoing process of managing tradeoffs during operations. This talk describes Red Storm, along with the infrastructure and operational requirements of Red Storm. A discussion of the facilities that surround and support Red Storm: shelter, power, cooling, networking, interactions with other platforms, operations support, and user services is included.
