[Colloquium] Computer Aided Diagnosis of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Diabetic patients feet are at the risk for peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage), which may lead to infection, ulceration, infection, and ultimately amputation. The key to managing diabetic foot is early detection. We have developed a computer aided diagnostic system for early detection of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Thermal recovery of the feet following cold stress is captured using an infrared camera. Individual frames from the thermal video are registered and segmented. The temperature recovery at each point in the foot is extracted and analyzed. The regions that exhibit pathological thermal recovery characteristics can then be identified. We will discover the following topics which have been solved to develop this system. 1. The protocol of the experiment. 2. Different thermal infrared (IR) cameras; the signal-noise model of the experiment. Stationarity and ergodicity of the IR camera noise. 3. The novel bio-heat equation with thermoregulation. The models of the thermoregulation and their biological sense. 4. Different classification algorithms, i.e. diagnosis of control and diabetic subjects.
